Headline: In the community
In the community Improving the health of our communities is core to who we are as an organization. Kaiser Permanente has been fostering the improved health of the communities we serve since our inception more than 60 years ago. Today we keep that tradition alive by focusing on four broad areas of work through the Kaiser Permanente Community Benefit Program:
  • Care and coverage for vulnerable populations
  • Community Health Initiatives for Healthy Eating, Active Living
  • Health care safety net partnerships
  • Developing and disseminating health knowledge
In all of our work, we are concerned with racial and ethnic health disparities. Our grants and volunteer programs are cornerstones for Kaiser Permanente Community Benefit.

We are a strong voice in the forums in which public policy is discussed, debated and shaped. Kaiser Permanente's Institute for Health Policy works with foundations, policy institutes, research programs, policymakers and other organizations to develop unbiased information about health care policy alternatives. The Institute has played an active role in advancing national patient safety policies that reduce medical and system errors and we are viewed as an important advocate for patient safety.

Kaiser Permanente's Educational Theatre Programs are a highly regarded part of our community outreach efforts. About 11 million people have attended Educational Theatre Programs since their inception more than 20 years ago. The theatrical programs address topics such as substance abuse, self-esteem, alternatives to violence, HIV prevention and grief and coping skills. Free performances take place at schools and are often open to the public. Resource materials for students, teachers and parents reinforce the health messages in each production.

Our community involvement helps improve the health of the communities we serve and builds pride among our employees. Kaiser Permanente employees are enthusiastic participants in community events, such as the March of Dimes Walk America and the American Diabetes Association Walk for a Cure. They also give generously of their time, talent, and energy to organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, Boys & Girls Clubs, and the American Cancer Society.
